Adoption Process

  • Complete Application

If you have decided you want to submit an application, please click the button below that will lead you to our online adoption application. Once your application has been completed and submitted, it will take a few days to be processed. We will reach out to you about the approval of your application. This does not guarantee adoption. We are seeking the best home, not necessarily first come, first serve. Adopters are expected to travel to us (Charlotte) if out of town.

  • Processing

Once we receive your application, we will follow up via email or phone if we have any questions. Part of our process is a vet check where we ensure existing animals in your home are up to date on vaccines and preventatives. We also ask that you provide personal references that we may contact.

  • Meet & Greet

For the safety of our fosters and animals, an approved application is required to schedule a meet and greet.

  • Finalize Contract

Following the meet & greet, you may choose to take home the animal same day, sleep on it, or opt to proceed with an adoption trial. When you are ready to make it official, you will be sent and asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee via tax deductible donation. Our adoption fee is $300 for most dogs.

Meet Duncan!

Duncan spent 6 weeks at our local Animal Control before his fosters picked him to take home. That was back in October 2024. Almost a year later and Duncan has essentially had zero interest, which unfortunately isn’t all that uncommon for dogs that look like him.

Duncan is a 2-year-old, 60-pound pittie mix with a big ole’ smile. He is the definition of a homebody—he’s happiest lounging in the sunshine, snoozing the day away in his favorite recliner, and enjoying lazy days with his people. Duncan has truly mastered the art of doing nothing as evident by the 20+ hours of sleep his fi collar tracks daily.

He’s already housebroken and totally comfortable hanging out in his crate when needed (like if you leave the house to go to work everyday), making him an easygoing companion for anyone looking for their own house hippo.

Don’t get us wrong Duncan enjoys chewing on bones or a game of fetch but he isn’t looking for constant action or adventure—he’s looking for a cozy home all by himself with patient people, somebody to give him a chance, and someone who appreciates Duncan for who he is not what he’s not.

If you’re searching for a loyal snuggle buddy who’s content just being by your side at home, Duncan might just be your perfect match. We're ideally looking for a pet free home (without breed restrictions) with a fenced in yard. Duncan is on a monthly prescription of Prozac ($22) to be the best version of himself but in the right environment this may not be needed forever.

Duncan is UTD on vaccines, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, neutered & microchipped.

Yes, Benny is a highly covered apricot mini goldendoodle but please read his entire bio to understand his needs.

Benny recently completed a 7 week board and train program. Benny now understands a whole list of verbal commands, has been working on neutrality in everyday situations (a challenge for an exuberant young doodle), and most importantly we now have tools to address his resource guarding tendencies, which are really more of a defense mechanism for when he doesn’t get his way. Time with a professional has allowed us to have a better understanding of Benny which has helped us identify the ideal forever home he needs.

Now doubt Benny is adorable. He is also a rockstar with obedience when in an environment that provides structure and clear expectations. But he’s not perfect. No dog is. We are seeking adopters who are willing to learn all his commands and can follow through with maintaining structure. Benny is the type of dog that if you give an inch, he takes a mile.  Adopters will need to be willing to listen to the instructions of his trainers and be open to follow up sessions to learn how to set you both up for success. If adopters put in the work, you will be rewarded with a great dog after the inevitable learning curve.

Benny is a great car rider and in public settings, good in his crate and on leash. Although he has been fostered with other dogs and is extremely friendly, we are seeking a home with no other pets so Benny can have undivided attention. No cats! An adult only home (no roommates) where all members of the family can and are willing to participate in training will also be best for Benny.

Benny has recently been groomed, is UTD on vaccines, and neutered & microchipped.

Our dood Benny.

While visiting a high kill county shelter so full dogs were in overflow crates, we spotted Howie and knew we had to come back if we found a foster. Thankfully when someone saw his precious face and short little legs, they offered to foster and Howie officially joined TFDH!

Howie is estimated to be 9-10 months old. He definitely is part basset hound with his long stocky build and but given his narrow head we think he's part dachshund which would explain his smaller size (currently 29 pounds). He also has a ravenous appetite so he may have some beagle in him too. Add all of those together and no doubt Howie is a handful - in to everything and has no quit. He is not a couch potato. Howie is playful with large & small dogs, sleeps soundly in his crate, is housebroken and walks well on a leash. You can tell he's a unfamiliar with some normal house sounds so he can be a bit barky to alert his people. For this reason a home with shared walls (apartment or townhome) isn’t ideal. We've discovered Howie LOVES watching tv and he even uses those big paws to paddle around a baby pool to stay cool in the summer heat. He doesn't particularly love to share his food or toys and he does eagerly takes treats so an adult only home or older kids would be best. Adopters will need to be understanding that Howie has some “finishing” to do and would benefit from training classes.

He is up to date on core vaccinations, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and has been neutered and microchipped.

It’s Howie!

Ready to go nuts for Pistachio?

Say hello to Pistachio, a young shepherd mix bursting with energy, personality, and a whole lot of love to give!

At just ~9 months old, Pistachio is a wiggle butt and doesn’t sit still for long when out & about. At home he’s as cuddly as he is fluffy. He’s learning the art of settling with routine & consistency thanks to his foster who has professional dog training experience. We don’t know his exact breed mix but we suspect he has some type of herding genes. A home without young kids would be best.

Pistachio gets along well with other playful pups and would be thrilled to have a tolerant or equally energetic doggy sibling—or he’ll happily take all your attention as a solo sidekick. He’s the perfect fit for an active person that’s willing to maintain the structure he’s accustomed to and continue working on basic obedience. His foster is also more than willing to offer training support after adoption as well. Pistachio is housebroken, crate trained, & rides well in a car.

Pistachio is UTD on vaccines, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, neutered & microchipped.

Harriet the heterochromatic.

This scruffy faced 6.5 month old pup (DOB 2/7/25) is 50% Standard Poodle, 10% husky, and.an assortment of other breeds (dna test completed). She gets her one blue eye from her daddy who was a mixed breed! We expect she has potential to be 60+ pounds when fully grown as her mom was a standard poodle. The result of an accidental litter, she thankfully avoided a shelter, before making her way to The Foster Dog House. Harriet has a great foundation for how young she is and is the perfect age to expose her to more of the world but ideally adopters are understanding that some basics will need to worked on.

🧬 50% standard poodle (confirmed by DNA test)

🎂 6.5 months old

⚖️ ~40lbs (expect she could be 60+lbs fully grown)

🐶 dog friendly

🎾 moderate puppy energy

🚽 working on potty and crate training

👣 great leash walker

🤝 takes a minute to warm up to new people (previously lived with a 5 year old)

🚙 Not the biggest fan of car rides

Harriet is UTD on vaccines, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, spay is scheduled for 9/9 and covered by the rescue, & she is already microchipped.
