Adoption Process

  • Complete Application

If you have decided you want to submit an application, please click the button below that will lead you to our online adoption application. Once your application has been completed and submitted, it will take a few days to be processed. We will reach out to you about the approval of your application. This does not guarantee adoption. We are seeking the best home, not necessarily first come, first serve. Adopters are expected to travel to us (Charlotte) if out of town.

  • Processing

Once we receive your application, we will follow up via email or phone if we have any questions. Part of our process is a vet check where we ensure existing animals in your home are up to date on vaccines and preventatives. We also ask that you provide personal references that we may contact.

  • Meet & Greet

For the safety of our fosters and animals, an approved application is required to schedule a meet and greet.

  • Finalize Contract

Following the meet & greet, you may choose to take home the animal same day, sleep on it, or opt to proceed with an adoption trial. When you are ready to make it official, you will be sent and asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee via tax deductible donation. Our adoption fee is $300 for most dogs.

Duncan spent 6 weeks at our local Animal Control before his fosters picked him to take home. His personality is still emerging but so far we know he loves playing with his rope, chewing on a bone, & playing fetch in the yard. You should see his little hops! Duncan is such a great boy inside the house too. He will curl up in a ball and sleep while his fosters eat dinner or do everyday activities. He is also used to being crated 8-5 while his fosters are at work. He’s housebroken! Though he’s not currently fostered with other dogs, he is dog friendly and loves a good game of chase. He could use some work with leash manners so a yard is a plus.

Duncan is a 2 year old, pittie mix, who is ~60lbs. He’s neutered, microchipped, UTD on vaccines & prevention.

Meet Duncan !

Ozzy joined The Foster Dog House from a rural NC shelter after being found as a stray and never reclaimed. It seems he may have been on the run for a bit as he's still got some weight to gain back. Typical for the breed he is always on the move and thrives with a yard to watch for birds & squirrels. He is a classic velcro GSP and follows his people everywhere and particularly enjoys napping on the couch.

He's a tall & strong German Shorthaired Pointer who likely needs a 6ft fence to be safe along with plenty of space and mental stimulation. He is used to sleeping in his crate and is housebroken. He’s a bit strong on a leash but does great in public settings. Slow introductions to other dogs are recommended or an only dog home.

Ozzy is around 2 years old, ~ 50 pounds, heartworm negative, UTD on vaccines, and neutered & microchipped.

GSP Ozzy!

Yes, Benny is a highly covered apricot mini goldendoodle but please read his entire bio to understand his needs. We are seeking an experienced adopter or dog professional to manage resource guarding tendencies.

Benny (fka Jordan) unfortunately recently returned to our rescue. He is a 1 year old mini goldendoodle. He is a people and dog friendly dog with playful energy to match. While yes he is adorable, he doesn’t like to share his food or high-value items but that can be managed in the proper environment (his previous adopters did not follow our instructions). 98% of the time it isn’t an issue but adopters need to be aware of potential triggers. He would benefit greatly from professional training (like most dogs) and we’re happy to refer you. Kids also make him anxious so we are seeking an adult only home. Any canine siblings will also need to be equally as playful and neutral about sharing items such as toys. He is a great car rider and in public settings, good in his crate, a bit strong on a leash, and has been fostered with big & small dogs. No cats!

Benny has recently been groomed, is UTD on vaccines, and neutered & microchipped.

NOTE: Benny started a board & train program on 7/3. We will evaluate potential adopters once training is complete in a few weeks.

Our dood Benny is back!

Maisy found herself at rural NC county shelter where a volunteer & foster met her and knew she wanted to help. She’s estimated to be around 6 months old and around 30 pounds. We don’t think she’ll grow too much more putting her at a comfortable medium size when fully grown. Your guess is as good as ours of what her breed mix might be.

Maisy is very affectionate and loves people. She also loves playing with other dogs but does have a more dominate play style that others may not be receptive to. She does takes direction if her exuberance is too much and eventually realizes who she can play with. She is great in public on her own and has been a frequent visitor at dog friendly stores where she’s made lots of friends. She is a vocal when she sees other dogs when out & about but she’s working on it. Though Maisy is young and still learning, she is not overly mouthy, walks great on a leash, and is already housebroken and crate trained, including if you have an 8-5 schedule.

Maisy’s foster family has even set her up for success by enrolling her in a 6 week basic obedience class as well as invested in private lessons to ensure she’s a well rounded girl with a great foundation for when she finds her forever home. We would recommend continuing training.

She is up to date on appropriate vaccinations, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and has been spayed & microchipped!

Meet Maisy!

This 1-2 year old Black Mouth Cur/Rodeshian Ridgeback mix (our best guess) found us. She was found on a street by a friend of the rescue and then another friend offered to foster her so she could serve her stray hold in a home vs. a shelter. Because she has a registered microchipped, we were hopeful her family who named her would be looking for her. However, calls to the contact info on file went unanswered so after a few weeks, Fern is officially part of our rescue and looking for her forever home.

It’s clear Fern has been well taken care of previously. She knows sits, down, shake & even speak! She is housebroken and able to be left uncrated. Fern is fostered with a larger female dog and they are a playful pair! Fern on her own is a good on walks and and good in the car.

Fern is around ~ 50 pounds, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, spayed & microchipped.

Our girl Fern!

While visiting a high kill county shelter so full dogs were in overflow crates, we spotted Howie and knew we had to come back if we found a foster. Thankfully when someone saw his precious face and short little legs, they offered to foster and Howie officially joined TFDH!

Howie is estimated to be 8-9 months old. He definitely is part basset hound with his long stocky build and but given his narrow head we think he's part dachshund which would explain his smaller size (currently 26 pounds). He also has a ravenous appetite so he may have some beagle in him too. Add all of those together and you get a rather well rounded puppy all things considering. Howie is playful with large & small dogs, sleeps soundly in his crate, is housebroken and walks well on a leash. You can tell he's a little unfamiliar with normal neighborhood sounds so he can be a bit barky to alert his people but each day he gets more comfortable. We've discovered he LOVES watching tv and he even uses those big paws to paddle around a baby pool to stay cool in this summer heat. He doesn't particularly love to share his food or toys and he does eagerly takes treats so an adult only home or older kids would be best.

He is up to date on core vaccinations, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and has been microchipped. His neuter is scheduled for 7/31.

It’s Howie!

Ready to go nuts for Pistachio?

Say hello to Pistachio, a young shepherd mix bursting with energy, personality, and a whole lot of love to give!

At just ~9 months old, Pistachio is a wiggle butt and doesn’t sit still for long when out & about. At home he’s as cuddly as he is fluffy. He’s learning the art of settling with routine & consistency thanks to his foster who has professional dog training experience. We don’t know his exact breed mix but we suspect he has some type of herding genes. A home without young kids would be best.

Pistachio gets along well with other playful pups and would be thrilled to have a tolerant or equally energetic doggy sibling—or he’ll happily take all your attention as a solo sidekick. He’s the perfect fit for an active person that’s willing to maintain the structure he’s accustomed to and continue working on basic obedience. His foster is also more than willing to offer training support after adoption as well. Pistachio is housebroken, crate trained, & rides well in a car.

Pistachio is UTD on vaccines, kept on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, neutered & microchipped.
